| Summary: | In the late 1800s in San Francisco, Chinese immigrants faced racism and were blamed for the city’s public health crisis. To the rest of San Francisco, disease originated from Chinese people. However, through data visualization we can see that this was not the case. This paper maps cases of disease against the city’s sanitation system and shows how the lack of adequate infrastructure contributed to high rates of disease. Data visualization is an increasingly important tool that historians need to utilize to uncover new insights. |
