=== Democracy grows out of the rational mind of mankind. However, in deeping its roots in China, it faces tremendous hardship. What is widely held to be in the way are Chinese national charater and the Chinese tradition. By inter-disciplinary approach, the author of this paper endeavers to demonstrate the possibility for the Chinese national character and cultural tradition to transform along the line of western democratic values.
Based on literature review, political democratization in this paper refers to the extent to which Chinese nationals accept democratic values. Due to limitation of resourses available, the Chinese cultureal tradition that shapes the Chinese national character and that this paper addresses is Confucianism.
Some people believe that Confucianism plays a negative role in the practice of political democracy. The author of this paper takes this to be a result of confusing and misunderstanding types of Confucian tradition and Confucian philosophy. The point of this paper is that there are three interacting aspects of Confucian tradition; namely, Intellectual and Practical Confucianism, Imperial Confucianism, and Vulgar Confucianism. And the Philosophy of Intellectual and practical Confucianism ought to be compatible with western democratic values. This hypothesis is proved with careful analysis. Prospects and recommendations of further research are also provided.
