Description
Summary:As part of the investigation of the stress distribution in metal covered wings leading to the most efficient distribution of materials, experiments have been made with flat plates reinforced with stiffeners under concentrated edge loads. Two theoretical solutions have been proposed: one by means of differential equations, considering the sheet between the stiffeners as the medium of transfer and the amount of load transferred to be proportional to the differences in the deflections; the other method, using the principle of the minimum of energy, approximates the accurate solution by considering the loaded system to be composed of columns (stiffeners acting with an effective width of sheet) under compression, the sheet being under shear.
