Description
Summary:This paper presents a new direct method of obtaining wave front approximations for problems involving hyperbolic differential equations. In the problem of a semi-infinite, end-loaded elastic strip (the problem used to illustrate the method), asymptotic solutions are obtained for wave fronts prior to multiple edge interactions. For the special end loading of a step velocity, the results agree with prior results obtained by more complex methods of approximation. Extension of the method to multiple interactions and to other problems of stress wave propagation is briefly discussed.
