This thesis seeks to discover how culture is understood by various disciplines and people. As such, a folk linguistic methodology and approach to understanding culture will be utilised to view the concept as it stands in various academic contexts, and also to discover how the people of Auckland understand culture in their everyday interaction with it. This will be done through the use of survey and thematic analysis, along with discussions of the role perspective and context play on our overall understandings of a given concept.
