Description
Summary:Abstract: During the 1980s, Thatcher’s economic revolution brought about important ideological and cultural implications closely related to the issue of identity construction. The Raj Revival cinematic productions apparently reflected the Conservative government’s return to the values of the past. Nonetheless, a deeper analysis of these productions also points to their ambiguous nature in their portrayal of gender, race and class tensions. My aim in this essay is to demonstrate how the 1984 TV series The Far Pavilions reflects this conflict of identities, especially through the analysis of the main character, a British subject raised by an Indian family who falls in love with a half-cast Indian princess.
