Summary:This paper explores the question why the well-known intellectual and patriot Rigas Ferraios had used in his monumental Carta the image of Hercules fighting an Amazon. What were the sexual connotations of this representation in a map intended to represent the space of the nation? The central idea is that the representations of masculinity and nationality were tightly interconnected, and through this interconnection both were redefined.
