Summary: | Self-medication is a practice widely used in the Brazilian population, particularly pregnant women are exposed to the risks of drug therapy. Several symptoms from gestational phase favor the use drugs, so the self-medication is doubly risky, exposing the mother and fetus to the risk. The present study aimed to know the profile of use of non-prescription drugs by pregnant women attending in a hospital in the municipality of Vitória da Conquista, BA. One exploratory and descriptive study, which involved 104 pregnant women attending antenatal consultation, in September 2014. It was observed that 62% of the mothers were earning up to 1 minimum wage and 96% of them practiced self was not performed. The most widely used self-medication drugs were dipyrone, paracetamol (acetominophen) and dipyrone associated with scopolamine. Pregnant women who self-medicated, 75% oh them did not report to the health professional that followed. The women reported they were informed about the risks of drug use in pregnancy. It was realized the importance of health professionals concerning the elucidation of the dangers associated to self-medication, and the pharmacist is an important element in the process of preventing self-medication among pregnant women |
