Summary:In a knowledge economy, knowledge has become the basic formof capital. Economic growth is driven by the accumulation ofknowledge. Knowledge is used in organisations to make money.The current study seeks to explore the challenges that SMEsexperiencewhen managing their knowledge in a developingcountry, Zambia that is undergoing radical change.Anexploratory and descriptive type of study was conductedbecause there is little research that has been done on theavailability and challenges of Knowledge Management in Smalland Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Zambia. Questionnaireswere administered to a sample of SMEs that were drawnrandomly across theselectedcity and those registered with therelevant authorities that is,the Patents and CompaniesRegistration agency (PACRA)of Zambia. Interviews wereconducted with some of the supervisors of these SMEs to allowfor more probing and insight into the challenges beingexperienced. It was found out that most SMEs experienced challenges of competing in the global market more specifically,economic, political and social challenges, human resourcechallenges, organisational structure challenges and technologicalchallenges
