Description
Summary:Roman settlement near Sočanica represents a unique civic complex whose foundation and position were exclusively connected with the natural potential of this area, and these are surrounding mine basins rich with ores of silver, lead and zinc. Mining industry as the main economic branch which was imposed by the nature of this soil, the only reason for existing and cease of life in this Sočanica settlement at the same time. Out of this great urban complex by systemic research works being performed during the 60-s and 70-s of the previous century, only one part of it had been included during which the following was discovered: forum, basilicas, parts of baths, few remains of small buildings, and necropolis. All discovered buildings are concentrated on the forum, in the Eastern part representing the core of the settlement. The precious data were obtained on the basis of archaeological excavations performed long ago, which are not enough in order to get a thorough reconstruction of the settlement life. The majority of issues had remained unclear and were in the domain of hypotheses either due to the restriction of research being concentrated in the Eastern part of the settlement or the inability of inspection since a larger part of the settlement was situated at private fertile areas and the place of contemporary-built premises existence, while some other parts were demolished by contemporary building. There is a hope by some future researches to get new data which will complete a present image of this anonymous settlement in the parts of the town where it has proven to be feasible, and until then it is necessary to undertake all protection measurements in order to preserve the existent building leftovers.
