| Summary: | The current state of the winemaking sector of the economy of Ukraine is analyzed basis on the official statistics that characterize the functioning of this industry. The study was carried out using the following methods: abstract/logical, economic/statistical, and graphing methods. The study determined a range of problems and unresolved issues that negatively affect the efficient and sustainable development of the wine industry: lack of raw materials, both morally and physically outdated material-and-technical base of vine/wine enterprises, the presence of the “shadow” sector of production, as well as the short comings of the current legislation on taxation, land use by vine/wine enterprises, and the lack of a full-scale State support. The author’s opinion concerning some steps that would allow the wine industry of Ukraine to overcome the state of decline and become competitive is presented. The regulatory role of the State in the development of the winemaking sector is underlined.
