Summary:<p class="Abstract"><strong>Abstract: </strong>This study aimed to increasing understanding concept and independent learning after used the learning materials translated of textbooks Chemistry on the topic Covalent Compounds. Research method that used was pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects in this study were students majoring in chemical education as many as 23 people. The instrument that used in this study were written test in multiple choices test. The data collection was done by providing the learning material to the students, then they read it independently. Written tests conducted before and after the independent learning. The result of this study indicated that almost half of the students understand the concepts on the subject of Covalent Compounds (40.87%) at pretest and most students understand the concept of (73.77%) at posttest. Most of the students (65.22%) had independent learning potential which moderatly with an average value of 0.50 N-Gain.<strong></strong></p><p class="keyWords"><strong>Keywords:</strong> Understanding Concept, Learning Materials, Covalent Compounds, Independent Learning</p><p class="Abstract"><strong>Abstrak:</strong> Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman konsep serta mengetahui kemandirian belajar mahasiswa setelah menggunakan bahan ajar hasil terjemahan buku teks Chemistry pada topik Senyawa Kovalen. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian pre-experiment one group pretest-posttest design. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa jurusan pendidikan kimia sebanyak 23 orang. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berupa tes tertulis bentuk pilihan ganda. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara pemberian bahan ajar kepada mahasiswa, kemudian mahasiswa membaca bahan ajar secara mandiri. Tes tertulis dilakukan sebelum dan sesudah pembelajaran mandiri. Temuan penelitian yang diperoleh menunjukkan pada saat pretes, hampir separuh dari jumlah mahasiswa memahami konsep pada topik Senyawa Kovalen (40,87%) dan pada saat postes sebagian besar mahasiswa memahami konsep (73,77%). Sebagian besar mahasiswa (65,22%) memiliki potensi belajar mandiri yang sedang dengan rata-rata nilai N-Gain sebesar 0,50.</p><strong>Kata kunci:</strong> Pemahaman Konsep, Bahan Ajar, Senyawa Kovalen, Belajar Mandiri
