Description
Summary:Objective: To analyze the number of maximum repetitions performed in the bench press exercise at intensities related to hypertrophy training and muscular endurance through prediction equation for 1-RM. Materials and Methods: nine male volunteers (27 ± 6.1 years) who practice strength training for at least one year attended the laboratory on four occasions. The maximum force was identified by testing multiple repetitions (O'Conner et al, 1989). Tests were applied to repetition maximum intensities of 60, 70 and 80% of 1RM. Results: The estimated maximal dynamic strength was 81.1 ± 22.5 kg, with a minimum of 49 and maximum of 110 Kg. The numbers maximum of repetitions to 60, 70 and 80% (19 ± 3, 16.1 ± 3.1, 11.1 ± 0.9, respectively) were different between one and another. Discussion: In the intensity of 80%, the maximum number maximum of repetitions was similar to Hoeger and collaborators. (1990) that assessed the number of repetitions until the concentric failure in trained men. Several factors may influence the results of the number of repetitions, among which we highlight execution speed, range of motion, and ability of neural activation, learning, reduced antagonist activity, motivation, muscle fiber type and size of the muscle group involved. Conclusion: The maximum number of repetitions at intensities of 60% and 80% of 1RM predicted through O'Conner and col. (1989) corresponded to the recommendations of the literature related to strength training prescription to get endurance and muscle hypertrophy, thereby exercise prescription for 1RM percentage loads predict by the equation O'Conner (1989) could be performed.
