Summary: | Midwives have been trained for many decades around the world, under the influence of international agencies, ministries of health, and non-governmental organizations. In the region of Melgaço, Pará, a serie of training courses have happened more intensely since 1998. In this article, I intend to give priority to the opinion of 22 midwives who work in this city. Based on their distinction between God's trainings and Earth's trainings, I wish to present how they participate and understand these courses. My central argument is that the training courses widen these women's opportunity span, especially if they focus on the discursive and simbolic appropriation of the courses, instead of restricting themselves only to its obstetric unfoldings.
