The study of the length-growing season of sugar beet and its placement in the year has been led in the region of Gharb (Morocco) in relation to three types of sugar beet varieties, Recoltapoly (type Z), Sultan (type N) and Desprez E poly (type E) during the year 2003-2004. Four sowing dates (September, October, November and December) have been combined with four harvesting dates (May, June, July and August) in a split plot design. Sowing dates in September and October gave the best results. As for harvesting dates, the best output (root yield, sugar content) has been achieved in June and July. The optimum growing season of 270 and 244 days is obtained with sugar beets sowed during the months of October and November respectively. The study of the length-growing season should take account of the types of variety. The extension of the length-growing season is especially favourable for the N and E types. Those of Z type are effective when the length-growing season is short.http://www.pressesagro.be/base/text/v12n2/139.pdfcarbohydrate contentcrop yieldharvesting dateMoroccosowing dateSugar beetvarieties
