The ideal selection criteria for duraplasty material in brain surgery: A review

Brain duraplasty is a dura mater reconstruction procedure conducted following the failure of conventional primary dural closure. The surgeon selects the material to be used during the procedure from allo-, auto-, xenograft or synthesis, based on unclear criteria. The objective of this review is to d...

The surgeon selects the material to be used during the procedure from allo-, auto-, xenograft or synthesis, based on unclear criteria. The objective of this review is to determine the ideal criteria to serve as a guide in choosing the best material. This involved searching PubMed in February 2020 for eligible studies with statements related to ideal criteria for duraplasty material selection. Therefore, a review was performed to assess the most tested measure. A total of 14 studies were selected, and 21 ideal criteria mentioned in the articles were listed. These were then posted into five groups, in terms of physical characteristics, immunological safety, the materials’ contribution during the native dural healing process, economic aspects and the direct prevention of post duraplasty complications. In addition, simple scoring was made for every criteria, and a total of seven mentioned in the literature were selected to form as a guide in the choice of materials for duraplasty. This study proposed seven ideal criteria in choosing the best duraplasty material, in order to serve as the guide to neurosurgeons.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214751920303613DuraplastyIdeal criteriaMaterial
