| Summary: | A Long Term Analysis of Social Spending: Towards an Indicator of Human Development. There has been a sharp increase in the number of quantitative analyses of social spending. So far, the relationships between each category of social expenditures (i.e. education, health, elderly care) and long-term economic growth have been investigated separately. As a result, their respective findings have not been confronted. The aim of this paper is to consider the recurrent contribution of social expenditures to the process of growth, and to their role in overcoming economic crises. This article proposes an economic interpretation of social spending by comparing and contrasting findings for each of these categories and by questioning their specific evolutions and common patterns. This comparison will be based on a “human development” indicator; the conceptual model is described here.
