Description
Summary:The Concordat of Bologna and the Council of Trento lead to a major change in the appointment of the abbess and the superior of the nuns’ houses. The triennial election, the resignation and above all the royal appointment took place at the heart of the communities. The election process gets disturbed and the nuns do not hesitate to contest the modalities that are imposed on them. These protests provide an opportunity to observe the liveliness of the communities or, on the contrary, the crises that affect them. Indeed, the challenges to the designation of the abbess reveal the shared (or discontinuous) imaginary of legitimate authority within the convent for the nuns, as well as the hiatus that can exist between the definition of an abbess for the community and for the various external actors who can interfere.By choosing to bring their disputes to civil justice and, from the 17th century onwards, to publicize them in legal briefs, nuns engage in practices of negotiation or conflict with the royal (or episcopal) authority in order to be recognised with their privileges and as legitimate actors in the service of Christ but also in the world, beyond the walls of the convent.
