An Investigation of Participating to Continuous Medical Education Programs of Medical Staff at A State Hospital

Aim: This study was planned to determine the frequency, funding and effectiveness of continuous medical education programs which the medical staff at a state hospital attended. Method: This descriptive research was performed on 87 medical staff working at a state hospital (doctor, nurse, midwife, health officer, health technician, and pharmacist) who were accepted to participate in the study. The data were collected through face to face interviews with a questionnaire. Their answers assessed by using SPSS 18.0 statistics package program. Results: 32 people participated in this study (36.8%) were physicians, 33 people (37.9%) nurses and 22 people (25.3%) belong to other health professions. They attended to total 139 continues medical education programs in last one year. 131 of the programs were related to their working area and 8 were not. 22 of the education programs were free of charge, 54 were financed by attendants, 22 were financed by a commercial sources and 41 were financed by the hospital. 3 of education programs were rated as lowly effective, 29 as moderately effective and 107 were highly effective. There was only one health care worker participated in distance education. Conclusion: Motivating and supporting medical staff for participating in professional development activities is critically important for both staff and health care system.
