Summary: | This article studies the discursive phenomena that explain why a project to extract Coal Bed Methane (a hydrocarbon similar to shale gas) is only lightly contested in France, whereas in countries where it is already being exploited, this hydrocarbon is highly controversial. Indeed, the discourse on this subject in the French public arena seems unanimously favourable to the extractive project. The method proposed here is that of an “archaeology” of the discourses that circulate in the various interacting arenas. This “archaeological” analysis is characterised by a particular attention to the dynamics of elaboration and transformation of discourses over time. It aims to discover the original statements underneath the statements that today convey an univocal representation of the extractive activity, through a semio-argumentative analysis. |
