Summary:The aim of this article is to examine relationships between crime rate and socio – economic, demographic and environmental factors in the subregions of Poland. There was used Ward’s method to reduce number of factors and make a choice of explanatory variables used in econometric models. There were compared results of different methods of choice explanatory variables. The worst fitted to empirical data was model where ex-planatory variables were chosen using gravity center method.
