The article deals with intonation and stress as the phonetic ways of influencing the addressee in advocacy discourse. We focus on the melodics, rhythm, intensity, tempo, tone colour, phrasal and logic stress that compose a suprasegmental level. Method and methodology. The method we are based on is discourse analysis. To be more precise, we use the method of analyzing phonetic means in the way they are perceived by the addressee and the way they help manipulate him/her. The methodological basis of the study is a wide range of Russian and foreign linguists’ research works that are devoted to discourse nature and advocacy discourse in particular. Results. The practical material of our research is the resonant speech of the advocate R.V. Ardytsupa in court. The video of the advocate’s speech can be found on the Internet and was much spoken about in 2015. The defendant of the criminal trial – S.V. Kuryshev – is an ex-politician and ex-member of the Legislative Assembly in Vladimirskaya region. Finally, we conclude that by means of expressive intonation an advocate can have an influence on the addressees during a trial. Practical implications. The results of the research can be used at lectures and seminars on Discourse, Forensic Linguistics and Theory Speech Manipulation.http://journal-s.org/index.php/mrsp/article/view/11000дискурсфонетическийсуперсегментные фонетические единицывоздействиеинтонацияударениеадвокатский дискурсадвокат
