Description
Summary:The present paper aims at analysing the purpose of the contribution of Dr Antonio Espina y Capo (1850-1930) to the journal Revista de Medicina y Cirugía prácticas, published in Madrid from 1877 to 1920. As a supporter of experimental medicine, Dr Espina found in this journal an instrument of propaganda to promote the progress of medical sciences during the second half of the XIX th century. The function of the press among the medical elites has been analysed throughout Dr Espina’s career path. As an echo of scientific debates, this type of specialised press helped the career of the physicians who used it to build their own professional fame and also enhanced the profession’s links.
