Summary:Two forms of intellectual activities, those of ideation and ideology, are discussed in the perspective of their importance for the area of language studies in general and more specifically for the learning and teaching of language. By ideation it is meant the general processes leading to knowledge - the search for knowledge in an efort to obtain comprehension as a way of satisfying the needs of the mind Ideology, on the other hand consists of improving things in the world. The article builds in the argument that a lack of discriminations between the two conceots leads toa number of misguided positions and conclusions in the applied language studies concerned with language learning and teaching.
