Summary:Introduction: Hexavalent chromium is a highly toxic metal and it is considered one of the contaminants with the highest environmental impact. Bioadsorbents have been considered as a viable option for chromium removal, leading to the necessity to study the behavior of these adsorbents in unit operations similar to the ones employed in the industry. Objective: To study the potential of cassava peels as bio-sorbent in the adsorption of hexavalent chromium in a semi-continuous process in fixed bed columns. Methodology: The effect of parameters such as feed flow rate, initial concentration and bed column height on the response variables rupture time and removal capacity was analyzed using a laboratory scale experimental set-up. Results: Low feed flow rates, low initial concentrations, and higher bed height produce the best conditions for chromium removal. Additionally, three classical models for removal on the packed column were used to fit the dynamic behavior of this process and to obtain significantly physical parameters. However, the best fitting was obtained using the model of the response surface. Conclusions: The concentration of chromium in the feed stream is the experimental factor that has the most influence on removal capacity and rupture time in fixed bed columns packed with cassava peel.
