Summary: | Practices and Opinions of Teachers in Developing Word Power of Students Words consist of sound and denotation components of language and are form units that have lexicological meaning. Words, main tenets of comprehension and understanding, have an important function in learning native language, getting to know about social culture and individuals’ emotional and cognitive development. For this reason, it is necessary to take into account the effect of teaching words in relation to individual’s social and personal development. It is very important to examine the opportunities and practices of word teaching and how individuals develop conceptual understanding in Turkish language classes in primary level. This research looks into the practices of Turkish language teachers in terms of teaching words and problems they have with respect to the issue. The research is a qualitative case study. Fifteen Turkish language teachers constitute the sample of the research. Data is collected through interviews and descriptively analyzed. According to findings, teachers found textbooks adequate and considered word teaching as very necessary for the overall aims of the lesson. However, words learning is a multi-dimensional and complex process. Coming from various backgrounds in terms of experience and content knowledge, teachers have various practices in teaching of words in Turkish language classes.
