Summary:At present, the processes which promote a conscious acquisition of the real causes and damages to the environment continue to be insufficient to preserve and to change the critical situation of the environment. On the basis of a brief analysis of the current environmental situation, in this work, it is intended to approach the still insufficient impact of environmental education or education for sustainable development. For that it is necessary to transform the present economical model and consumption lifestyle for the achievement of a real sustainable development.  In this sense, It is stated the need of interpreting education as a process in all its dimensions and within it, the importance of including environmental education as a transverse content. Finally some actions are proposed which may contribute to attitude formations socially committed with environment in future citizens.
