Description
Summary:The purpose of this article is to present "listas nominativas de habitantes" (lists of the names of inhabitants), a type of population census of the colonial period, as a useful resource for studying prices at that time. These documents include, for the last years of the 18th century and the first years of the 19th, large lists of prices charged at that time in the towns. The lists were made by the almotaçarias (market and sanitary inspectors) of the local councils to control the regional markets . They mention goods produced and consumed in the nearby regions, products which were exported and imported. A criticism of the sources and some validity tests are presented throughout the text.
