The study was designed to determine the effect of Agaricus bisponus and Pleurotus ostreatus mixed powder diet in ameliorating Diabetes mellitus and its complications. Experimental diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of Alloxan monohydrate at dose of 150 mg/kg body weight. Groups II to V animals were induced to diabetic state; group 1 animals served as control and were injected with 0.5 ml of normal saline. At the third day, Hyperglycemia was confirmed by measuring the blood glucose level. The Diabetic rats were fed with broiler feeds supplemented with dried Agaricus bisponus and Pleurotus ostreatus mixed powder diet at doses of 15 and 30 g daily for a period of four weeks whereas the control animals were given only broiler feeds. The results showed that administration of Alloxan significantly (p < 0.05) increased blood glucose level with significant (p < 0.05) elevation in serum Alkaline phosphatase ALP, Aspartate aminotransferase AST, Alanine aminotransferase ALT, hyperlidemia, sodium Na+, bicarbonate ion HCO3, potassium K+ and with significant (p < 0.05) reduction in high density lipoprotein, serum total protein and chloride. Dietary intervention with dried Agaricus bisponus and Pleurotus ostreatus mixed powder diet at doses of 15 and 30 g/daily for a period of four weeks reversed the pathological condition associated with induced diabetic states. Therefore, the study indicated that Agaricus bisponus and Pleurotus ostreatus mixed diet may protect the liver and kidney in hyperglycemic state.
