This study aimed to characterize the potentialhealth risks identified on routes of healing and care observedand described by communitarian health agents working inBarra do Rio, Balneário Camboriú – Santa Catarina State/Brazil. We developed a qualitative approach adapted fromethnography and case study methodologies. We identifiedseveral routes of healing and care involving different healthsystems, each one bearing specific potential risks for health.Thus, this study provides information that may be helpfulfor health workers to stimulate patients’ autonomy and self-caring as well as to inform these patients about potentialhealth risks on the itineraries they may take, even if thesedon’t include the formal health system.
