Summary: | This article studies three essential aspects of the philospher according to Plutarch of Chaeronea : his ἀτοπία, his particular association with divinity, as well as the modes and content of his philosophy. Observations are on the one hand based upon a text of an argumentative nature (the first Platonic Question), on the other hand upon the three philosophical myths of the Plutarchan corpus (De facie orbis lunae 940f-945d, De genio Socratis 589f-592e, De sera numinis vindicta 563b-568f), in particular the myth of Thespesios in the De sera. The thesis proposed is that different modes of being a philosopher are coherent, if one takes into account the two characters of the philosophical being of Plutarch himself : his own Platonism and the role of practical ethics in his thought.
