Summary:Considering the importance ofemotional intelligence, the time has come for schools to focus on its teaching. The quick development oftechnology and computers and the ever greater opening of frontiers and cultural exchanges has meant many teaching professionals are looking into generating values, goals and capabilities in kids that allow them to solve problems related to emotions and feelings, both for them and for others. This article aims, firstly, to clarify the concept of emotional intelligence within a historical framework, comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences presented by various authors on the subject. Secondly, the article shall present a review of the new approaches dealing with the educational treatment that should be given to the development ofthis type of capabilities.
