Summary: | Purpose. The article deals with the linguistic and cultural features of zoonym proverbs in both the English and Russian languages. Proverbs are an integral part of the linguistic and cultural foundation of a language, they represent the historical, cultural and linguistic specifics of a nation’s life. The considered form of folk art is a genre of folklore, illustrating the peculiarities of people’s thinking, reflecting their everyday life, which is the reason for the interest in this issue and determines the relevance of the study. The author sums the variations of proverbs definitions in English and Russian literature, analyzes their components, and identifies the frequency of zoonym proverbs use in both the English and Russian languages, examines the specific qualities of proverbs.
Method or methodology of the work. In the course of the study the author uses such methods as axiological method, revealing the specificity of linguistic and cultural peculiarities as a structure, combining material and spiritual values; a systematic method for analyzing the relationship of language and culture; the method of continuous selection to obtain practical research material.
Results. Based on extensive material of theoretical research and practical data, the authors of the study conclude that zoonym proverbs are a productive phenomenon in folklore in Russian and English languages. They reflect its linguistic and cultural properties and features. Having studied the linguistic and cultural features of proverbs, the author comes to the conclusion that despite the geographical distance in the English and Russian languages the semantic correspondence of many proverbs is typical.
Practical implications. The results of the study can be applied in the sphere of contact linguistics, linguistic variation, intercultural communication. |
