It is a study about the colonial period in the State of Maranhão, using mainly wills of residents who lived between 1740 and 1799. Indigenous slavery and the massive introduction of African labor were evidenced with great intensity; extensive cattle ranching being replaced by cotton and rice plantations to serve the external market; the ethnic diversification of the region and the advancement of the colonizing process, among other things.
