Description
Summary:This article sheds light on the organization of several groups of individuals around al-Aqsa Mosque and looks into their relationships with the holy site and with each other, the latter of which are characterized by competition and conviviality. It also explores how the notion of autochthony and the religious positions held inside the mosque are intertwined. Some functions are official and implemented by employees; others are informal. Yet even if some individuals work on a volunteer basis, their positions confer legitimacy on the holders of said functions. How do Jerusalemites mobilize this notion of autochthony to explain their own relationship to the holy place and how is it depicted in the contemporary context?
