Description
Summary:According to the studies, fewer men state their renouncement of care than women. This article takes that observation as its starting point in view of questioning it contextually. Based on interviews with agricultural workers in renouncement, the analysis clarifies the model of masculinity brought forth to explain these renouncements. This agricultural model of traditional masculinity is characterized by a valorization of resistance to pain, a refusal of outside assistance and a low level of concern for health. Those elements a priori facilitate adopting a behaviour of renouncement. However, the men interpret and continually adjust the model of masculinity in terms of their situation. Those adjustments may sometimes lead to greater attention being paid to health questions. An assortment of variables, such as age, disability and matrimonial situation are thus taken into account in precisely and contextually analysing the relationship between masculinity and renouncement of care.
