Description
Summary:Most studies of the transregional circulation of knowledge in the social sciences focus on the transfer of ideas, traditions, authors, and paradigms from the global North to the South. Thus far, little attention has been paid to the circulation of Southern Theories in the global North, especially the dependency theories, which gave rise to epistemological and political transformations within European area studies and the development discussion that continue to be felt today. By analyzing the translation process of Latin American dependency theories by the prestigious Edition Suhrkamp in the Federal Republic of Germany, this article addresses precisely this gap. Focusing on this little-explored direction in the translation of social theory – from “semi-peripheral” languages to a language of the “center” – the aim is to provide an innovative empirical case study of North–South intermediations and recognition processes within the unequal process of the internationalization of the social sciences.
