Description
Summary:This paper aimed to identify the difficulties, challenges, and strategies implemented by female healthcare givers in Lomé, Togo, in achieving work and life balance. Qualitative data have been collected from female healthcare givers in two public health facilities, their spouses and their male colleagues. The results showed that cultural norms and practices have confined men and women to their respective gender roles according to the sexual division of labor. So, performing domestic tasks is considered as a duty for women, but a transgression of social norms for men. Also, the demands and conditions of the medical profession and the shortage of personnel make it difficult for women to balance work and family life. Female healthcare givers have implemented several adaptation strategies: using parental assistance, employing domestic workers and school coach, acquiring household appliances.
