Summary: | The sociologist who wrote this article was formerly part of the management at the French carmaker Renault. He presents major dysfunctions within companies, mistakes and sometimes preposterous decisions which can be made there. His analysis brings together the general framework of French organisational studies and more original elements usually neglected in traditional social science. It therefore deals with cognitive mistakes, « micro-communication », « meaning management » and, finally, the « non-punishment » principle. Various illustrations are given of these concepts which help understand the way companies work : plane crashes, credit crunches or even nuclear powered submarine sinkings. |
