Summary: | PURPOSE Investigate the effects of lithium chloride and/or endurance exercise on metabolic syndrome in high fat-induced obese rats. METHODS 10-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats (n=45) were subjected to a high-fat diet for 8 weeks followed by lithium (2 mg/kg Lithium chloride) and/or endurance exercise (40% VO2max, 12 m/min, slop 0%, 3 d/week) for 4 weeks. RESULTS Lithium and endurance exercise improved blood glucose and insulin response in the oral glucose tolerance test compared to the FC group, but there was no additional effect according to the combined treatment. Serum levels of AST and ALT and urinary components were similar to those of CC group. CONCLUSIONS The short-term lithium or exercise treatment significantly improved metabolic syndrome in high fat diet induced obese rats and did not show any blood or urinary toxicity, but there was no additive effect on metabolic syndrome of combined treatments. |
