Summary:The right to national self-determination has triggered a regular confrontation between the state government and the national governments in the periphery of Spain. This paper examines the theoretical foundations of that right as associated to the democratic, liberal and nationalist principles. Then I apply the notion of self-determination to the nations within a democratic state such as Spain, and propose a new alternative paradigm that may supersede the mainstream paradigm today.
