Description
Summary:The twenties were decisive in the configuration of the Hispanic-Chilean relationships. In the economic part, from the First World War the commercial scale was favourable to Chile and especially to the sales of his nitrate on the Spanish market, crucial moment for the discovery of much cheaper synthetic saltpeters. Nevertheless, in the decade of 1920 the income of the saltpeter experienced a very significant growth with regard to the previous years, due to the good consideration of this natural product between the Spanish farmers. The goods of the commercial exchange were on Chilean part principally the saltpeter. On Spanish part there is a major diversification, being the most out-standing the textiles of cotton and wool, food conserves, olive oil and cigarettes paper. In the political area, the relationships went through different phases according to the circumstances of each country. During mandates Alessandri's and Figueroa's mandates, connections focused on mutual support in the ratings of the League of Nations. However, the closest and most intense period between both nations ocurred during the Government of Ibáñez of the Field. In this period, two commercial agreements were signed by Spain, one of commercial character (in 1928), in that customs advantages were established for certain products of each country and other one (in 1930) on the internment of saltpeter in Spain. In this climate of understanding there was signed an Agreement of Arbitration (1927), there rose up to the range of embassies and the respective legations (1928) and it continued the bilateral support in the ratings of the League of Nations.
