Summary: |
As a main objective of this research we want to analyze the peculiarities of translating irony and humor in subtitling comedies. On screen, two forms of humor are presented: non-verbal humor (images, sounds, sound effects) and verbal humor (scripts, scenarios). The latter, being part of the text as the very object of translation, often seems to create problems for the audiovisual translators. Words sometimes cause laughing voluntarily (puns, spoonerism etc.) or involuntarily (blunders) and in these cases, humor is created from words and their context so that translating these words with synonyms and equivalents makes the translation lose its comedy and the comic effects. Most of the problems that the translator can face are because of the socio-cultural connotations. Due to the fact that the main difficulty in interpreting the humorous message in audiovisual translation, and more particularly in comedies, is that the actors use a colloquial language, this implies more work for the translator who must infer all the connotations and references including the way of life, traditions, history as well as the daily evolution experienced by the speakers and, consequently, their language. Translating humor turns out to be one of the most difficult genres in translation. First and foremost, culturally, humor is based on word games that, in addition to technical problems, force the translator to look for experiences and common ground for both the speaker and the listener. Therefore, we are to analyze various processes that the translator goes through to render the full message of a film from French culture to Romanian culture. We also plan to analyze the way the comic is translated on the screen in the film Welcome to the Sticks (translation), originally in French as Bienvenue chez les Cht'is.
|
