Summary: | In the book, Le chercheur et la souris (The Researcher and the Mouse), by Georges Chapouthier and Françoise Tristani-Potteaux, the authors describe the experiences of Dr. Chapouthier´s career as both a biologist and a philosopher. The commentary made by Marion Bergere (in French) highlights the evolution of Chapouthier´s thinking with regards to animals and how he wrestled with complex issues in animal experimentation such as the protection of the species versus protection of the individual and the scientific and medical advances to be gained from animal experimentation versus the intrinsic value of each sentient being. As Ms. Bergere notes, the book represents an interesting perspective on the complexities of the question of animal experimentation from a biologist-philosopher. |
