In this context, this article presents a literature review on the relationship between maternal nutritional status and possible pregnancy outcomes. We conducted a bibliographic search on the databases LILACS, SciELO, MEDLINE and BIREME, using the keywords "nutritional status" was held, "pregnancy", "hypertensive disorder of pregnancy," "gestational diabetes", "anemia" and "low birth weight "in Portuguese and their correlates in English and Spanish, as well as books dealing on the subject also were used. The publications included dated to a period between 1984 to 2012. Among the evaluated studies, we observed: a relationship between SHG and DMG outcomes with excessive gestational weight, in that the increase in BMI increased the chance of developing GDM and SHG; an association of insufficient gestational weight with LBW; and a considerable prevalence of anemia according the trimesters of pregnancy. Thus, the nutritional monitoring is extremely important, so that nutritional guidelines promote an adequate nutritional status and minimize the risks of maternal and newborn complications. http://www.uesb.br/revista/rsc/v10/v10n4a09.pdfEvaluation nutritional;State nutritional;Pregnancy;Bodyweight;Risk factors;Birthweight;
