Summary:This article presents partial results of a research that studies the reasons for the devotional failure of the cult of São Francisco Xavier, the patron saint of Salvador, describing and analyzing the attempts to popularize the devotion, as well as the interests of different agents relating to the celebrations of the saint. Studying political conflicts related to the organization of the ceremonies and the memory building of the supposed salvific intercession of the Navarrian during the 1686 epidemics that took over the city of Bahia, the intention is to contribute to the understanding of relevant aspects of the political and religious history of modern Brazil.
