Summary: | The aim of this paper is to retrace the historical dynamics of the development of arts and crafts as a cultural phenomenon.
Research methodology. The article used a historical approach to study the dynamics of development of decorative and applied arts. In analyzing the role of arts and crafts in different historical periods, a cultural approach has been used.
Results. The historical dynamics of developing decorative and applied arts is considered in the context of cultural approach. Particular attention is paid to those cultural aspects that have the formation of decorative and applied arts in a given historical period. The handmade practice is considered as a modern form of the existence of arts and crafts.
The development of arts and crafts is closely linked to the changes in the cultural paradigm of the society. At the initial stage of development, the main feature of creativity is syncretism. The main categories of arts and crafts are formed in antiquity during the transition to the philosophical worldview. At the age of the Middle Ages, social functions of decorative and applied arts are more clearly distinguished, the conditions for the development of machine production are emerging, which predetermines the antithesis of arts and crafts and mass production in the historical process.
