Summary: | A story of a “plural embedment”: or how to find an outside, inside. This article is the singular narrative of a “plural embedment” that has taken place aboard a transoceanic expedition. It depicts some practical limits that can appear through the multiplication of institutional engagements or other affective involvements, in the learning of the work of research. Seeking funds, finding solutions to carry out a field survey or trying to integrate into the academic world, the “squeezed” young researcher has often to “play” with these multiple and contradictory forms of being embedded. It’s though in juxtaposing these involvements that the embedded researcher can find a way to make some free space, to take a necessary “step to the side”, a kind of detachment, that is not necessarily a position of “control from above”. |
