Summary:In this paper we discuss the pre-servise training courses offered for theachers of literacy in the program of solidarity in the alphabetization of adults (Programa Alfabetização Solidária) and analyze theirinfluence on the professional practices of these teachers. The effectiveness of three different focuses adopted in these course is investigated. The data show that the best results are obtained when the course focuses on the development of the literacy of the teacher him/herself, rather than on classroom practices.
