Summary:Theories and typologies of change need to be supported and validated by historical evidence which can establish the changes that effectively occurred. Sequentialist theories of change encounter difficulties in accommodating the vast number of factors that determine the changes suffered by the value of linguistic units. An analysis of the semantic changes suffered by –eirreveals the need for a theoretical framework which does not dichotomize lexicalization and grammaticalization, but which takes into account factors such as subjectivization and pragmatization, which after all coexist with the other ones
